Sajek Valley, one of Bangladesh's most popular tourist destinations, has recently suffered a devastating fire. This disaster has completely destroyed several resorts and cottages, posing a significant setback to the tourism industry.
Incident Details
The fire broke out last Monday afternoon near the Obokash Resort in Sajek. According to locals, strong winds quickly spread the flames to nearby wooden resorts and cottages. Due to the remote mountainous location, the fire service units faced delays in arriving, causing the fire to spiral out of control.
Possible Causes of the Fire
Preliminary investigations suggest the following possible causes:
- Electrical Short Circuit: Many wooden cottages have unsafe electrical wiring, increasing the risk of fire hazards.
- Gas Cylinder Explosion: Leaks from gas cylinders used in some resorts for cooking could have triggered the fire.
- Tourist Negligence: Careless disposal of cigarette butts or other flammable items may also have contributed to the disaster.
Extent of Damage
This catastrophic fire has completely destroyed at least 30 resorts and cottages. Many tourists lost their valuable belongings, although no casualties have been reported. However, a few tourists and resort staff sustained minor injuries.
Rescue Operations
Upon receiving news of the fire, local residents and resort staff attempted to extinguish the flames to the best of their ability. Later, the army and fire service teams arrived at the scene and managed to control the fire. However, the lack of a fire station in such a remote area significantly delayed the response time.
Future Measures
To prevent such incidents in the future, the following steps should be taken:
- Establishing a permanent fire service unit in Sajek.
- Ensuring proper fire safety measures in resorts and cottages.
- Strictly enforcing safety regulations for tourists.
- Conducting regular inspections of electrical and gas connections.
Conclusion
As one of Bangladesh’s premier tourist destinations, ensuring safety in Sajek Valley is of utmost importance. If the relevant authorities and resort owners take necessary precautions, such tragedies can be avoided in the future.
